It’s been over half a year since I recovered from Covid. I got sick in June 2022, when virus mutations had already slowed down lethality.

I wasn’t afraid to die when I got covid. My biggest concern was changes in smell and taste – two very important senses for my professional activity and, well, for me to do the things I like.

My symptoms, at first, were like the common flu. Then I realized that I was slow in thinking. In the sensory part, I spent a few days feeling a bitter taste where there was no bitterness. It went by fast. He thought he had been spared.

Lo and behold, a few weeks ago, I started to get upset with the smell of something I’ve always cooked: pasta. The smell of pasta in boiling water, not just any pasta: I only smelled the strange smell when cooking Italian durum wheat pasta. A slightly unpleasant sensation.

I’ve spent my whole life cooking pasta like this. For me, it was a neutral food. I had never noticed any relevant smells until then.

I thought the problem was with a brand that I had been using a lot. I tried another brand. And other. The smell persisted. One night, as I was lying down to sleep, it crossed my mind that the smell of pasta was perhaps in my head. A sequel to Covid.

The next day, wrote a post about it on Twitter. Many people commented, many people even went through or are going through something similar or worse.

A profile that identifies itself as Élio asked: “Would it be an odor similar to that of dog food?”.

Ready. The “slightly unpleasant” just got an upgrade. That was it.

Immediately my brain sent me to the main street of the Portão neighborhood, in Atibaia, where farm products stores compete for the strongest smell of dog food.

Returning to Twitter, the post yielded several interesting reports.

Pedro contracted Covid in 2020 and to this day has a very high sensitivity to the smell of kitchen gas.

Fernando began to be disgusted by the smells of meat and chicken cooking.

Rodrigo says that his wife cannot perceive the odor of burnt food.

Zé now thinks that coffee smells like burnt weeds. And she came to hate cilantro, which she used to love. Mikasa, on the other hand, didn’t consume anything that was bitter – and now she likes coffee.

Elaine began to smell cockroaches – yes – in the most exquisite perfumes.

Beth, who spent a month in the hospital in 2021, feels scents that are not there. Smell of hair dye when none is around.

They say that the olfactory dysfunction is called parosmia, it is very common in Covid recovery and can last for several months.

With Covid becoming a chronic disease, we will have a permanent crowd of people shuffling the smells and tastes. How will the chef treat the customer who smelled carrion in the steak? And what if, in fact, it is the chef who is damaged and has fried a rotten steak without realizing it?
