The signings of the “Alexandre Mattos era” at Athletico

This Monday (11) the passage of Alexandre Mattos at the Athletico. The CEO preferred not to renew with Furacão and left his position after two years at the club to settle with Vasco. During the period, the professional was notable for signings such as the arrival of Vitor Roque, the one with the greatest impact on Furacão.

Appointed as CEO of Football Business and National and International Areas, Mattos arrived in January 2022 to be responsible for relationships with agents and clubs, in addition to developing national and international partnerships. Trying to be more active in the market, Athletico bet on the professional, renowned for his work at Palmeiras, to strengthen the squad and seek achievements. Last year, led by Felipão, Furacão reached the Libertadores final, losing the title to Flamengo.

The main challenge was dealing with the club’s financial limitations, accustomed to betting on young players and not pouring millions into the market. But it was with Mattos at the club that Athletico made the biggest investment in its history, in 2022, reaching disburse more than R$80 millions, bringing names like Canobbio (R$ 15.2 million), Cuello (R$ 12.8 million) and Alex Santana (R$ 13 million). In 2023, it brought figures such as Zapelli (R$ 19.3 million), Lucas Esquivel (R$ 9.8 million) and Fernando (R$ 2.5 million), betting more on players without contracts, as was the case with Vidal, Fernandinho, Madson, Kaique Rocha and Willian Bigode.

Mattos’ main signing at Athletico, undeniably, was the striker Victor Roque, who was at Cruzeiro. At the time, Furacão paid R$24 million to have the player, who hadn’t even turned 18 yet. This season, the club sold for almost R$400 million – the biggest purchase and biggest sale in the history of Rubro-Negro.
