Younger donors, between 16 and 29 years old, occupy the penultimate place in the ranking of age groups with the highest level of donation

Manaus (AM) – A survey carried out by the Hospital Foundation of Hematology and Hemotherapy of Amazonas (HEMOAM) identified that donors between 40 and 49 years old have a greater participation in blood donation in the State of Amazonas, representing 29.28% of the total number of registered donors. The 30-39 age group appears in second place with 25.59%, followed by the 50-59 age group with 18.26%.

The Hospital Foundation of Hematology and Hemotherapy of Amazonas (HEMOAM) identified in a survey that donors between 40 and 49 years old have a greater participation in blood donation in the State of Amazonas, representing 29.28% of the total number of registered donors. The 30-39 age group appears in second place with 25.59%, followed by the 50-59 age group with 18.26%.

The survey that used the HEMOsys system database, which manages the Blood Cycle processes within the Amazon blood center, took into account the analysis of the 607,900 donors registered in the bank and also showed that young people between 16 and 29 occupy the penultimate position in the ranking of predominant age groups, with 17.58%, second only to the age group between 60 and 69 years old, which corresponds to 9.2% of the total number of donors.

In addition to the aging factor, the survey also demonstrates that there is an increasing need for the loyalty of younger donors. This is because, taking into account that the maximum age for donating is 69 years old, this aging of the donor population worries the institution, which is increasingly noticing the increase in incapacity due to health problems that arise with age.

The technical director of the Hemoam Foundation, Dr. Sérgio Albuquerque, states that a concern for the blood center is the low loyalty of younger donors.

“A very small segment of the population develops this awareness of continuing to donate voluntarily and this explains why younger people are not among the institution’s main donors”,

said Sérgio Albuquerque.

The donor’s doctor, Jael Bohadana, sees advancing age as an important marker in disability numbers, especially among those who do not value a good quality of life and have a greater tendency to develop chronic diseases, mainly diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia (high cholesterol and triglycerides), which hinders the blood donation process.
