The triumph in Madrid is the biggest in Bia’s career, who will enter the top 10 of the doubles world ranking for the first time – the São Paulo native started the tournament in 20th position – which will be published by the WTA (Associação Feminina de Tênis). this Monday (8).
“Very happy for the title and for the top 10 in doubles, but even happier for the way I performed. I managed to play my game and impose myself in the important moments. I’m quite happy with how I’ve tackled the matches all week. It’s also great to learn and share these weeks with Vika, who is a great player who has a very nice mentality and a very nice attitude in the important moments of the match. Finally, I would like to dedicate the title to my godmother Teté, Telma, who has a birthday today and is a very special person in my life”said the Brazilian, shortly after winning the title.
Last year, the 26-year-old left-hander from São Paulo had already distinguished herself by winning the two main singles titles of her career – WTA 250 in Nottingham and Birmingham – in addition to runner-up at the WTA 1000 in Toronto. For her performance throughout 2022, Bia was awarded the WTA Best of the Year Award, for being the tennis player who most evolved in the season: she jumped from 82nd to 15th position.
The Brazilian is a strong candidate to represent the country at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The WTA ranking on June 10, 2024 will define the 28 qualified for the Games, respecting the maximum limit of four places per country. There are still three others that will be distributed by the International Tennis Federation (IFT), taking into account the results of this year’s Pan American Games in Santiago (Chile), Asian Games and African Games.
The Brazilian’s next commitment will be the Masters 1000 in Rome, starting this Monday (8). In the current season, Bia was runner-up in the doubles of the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, after losing the final to the Czechs Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
