teachers recommend rest in the final stage

Students from all over the country will take, this Sunday (12), the mathematics and natural science tests of the National High School Exam (Enem) 2023. In total, there will be 90 questions, all objective, which must be solved in 5 hours. Revision and rest can help students be more prepared and confident for the second day of the exam.

“Reviewing more frequent subjects in exams is ideal! Trying to study all the test content in a week is a bad idea, but reinforcing concepts and formulas on the most common subjects will bring more peace of mind and better chances of getting a good score”,

says mathematics teacher at Colégio Leonardo Da Vinci in Porto Alegre, Diego Andrades.

For chemistry teacher at Ao Cubo school in Rio de Janeiro Caroline Azevedo, three things are very important when preparing for the second day of tests. The first of them, as Andrades also highlighted, is to focus studies on the most recurring content from previous years, asking questions from other editions of Enem. The tests and answer sheets from previous years are available on the website of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep).

The second is to arrive at the test with a defined strategy, that is, knowing which test you will solve first and how much time you will dedicate to each area of ​​knowledge. “You shouldn’t make this type of decision on the spot, much less take the test without a defined strategy”, says the teacher.

The third is to evaluate what went right and what went wrong on the first day of Enem, especially in relation to time control. Last Sunday (5), students took language, humanities and writing tests.

“Some questions in the areas of mathematics and nature are very difficult, sometimes involving a lot of calculations, so the student needs to manage their time well to be able to complete the entire test. A student who spends a lot of time on a single question often cannot complete the entire test, which is why they end up guessing questions without even having read them. And they are often easy and quick questions, which he would have gotten right if he had at least read”,

says Azevedo.

In the same vein as Azevedo, Professor Andrades suggests that students try to start the test by looking for an easier question.

“At the beginning of the race, nervousness gets in the way and can compromise. Choosing where to start carefully is essential to lowering anxiety and gaining confidence. Furthermore, prioritize questions that are quick to understand and interpret, as well as content that you feel more comfortable with,”

According to the professor, organization is the key to good performance. “In the first hour of the test, don’t hesitate to skip the most difficult questions, making notes on them to come back to later. Finally, remember that test questions are about solving a problem. Formulas can help, but are not mandatory. Try to understand the problem to be solved, use the alternatives to your advantage and if you don’t remember the formula, make estimates or approximations to reach the correct answer”, he recommends.

I was bad on the first day, what now?

Even those who believe they didn’t do so well on the first day of the Enem can still improve their grade on the second day. According to teachers, it is important not to give up.

The mathematics teacher at Enem Central, part of the Amapá government, Márcio Costa, says that during the week he encouraged all students to take the test. On the first day of the exam, around 28% of those registered missed the exam.

“Just now I left the classroom and told the students that almost 30% of the students didn’t take the test, the tendency is for more students to be absent. Just the fact that he’s going to do it already puts him at an advantage. The first point is, then, to take the test”,

says the teacher.

Costa also recommends that students rest at least the day before the exam: “On Saturday, have some leisure time with family, friends, go for a walk, take care of your mental health”, he recommends. This may help with exam anxiety.

Azevedo also encourages participants not to give up on the second day of the race. According to her, Enem has independent grades in each area of ​​knowledge, so not performing as well on the first day does not mean that the student cannot do well on the second.

“They are very different disciplines. On the second Sunday of the exam, students are usually less tense, as they have already had the experience of the first day, they already know the test location, they already know what worked and what didn’t in their strategy. Then he can make these adjustments”, says the teacher, who adds: “A good performance on the second day can perfectly compensate for a low number of correct answers on the first Sunday”.

Enem grades can be used to apply for places at public universities through the Unified Selection System (Sisu), for scholarships at private higher education institutions through the University for All Program (ProUni) and to obtain student financing through the Student Financing Fund (Fies). It can also be used to access higher education at foreign universities.
