Target of Bolsonarist attacks, the military commander of the Northeast, General Richard Nunes, wrote a text in which he criticizes what he describes as nonconformity with the “traditional legalistic and neutral posture of the Army”, which has generated “insults to longtime comrades, attacks to reputations typical of totalitarian regimes, ‘leaks’ of alleged information, dissemination of defamatory memes, all to try to achieve the cohesion of the Force”.

According to Nunes, such a posture constitutes a flagrant betrayal of respect for the hierarchy and discipline that should characterize the Army.

Nunes was one of the generals harassed by sectors of Bolsonarism during the elections. In addition to him, generals Valério Stumpf, chief of staff of the Army, and Tomás Paiva, current commander of the Force, were pressured to support anti-democratic actions in the face of the defeat of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). As they did not join the coup, they started to be called traitors and “watermelons”, that is, green on the outside, but red (leftists) on the inside.

In 2018, Nunes was appointed Secretary of Public Security in Rio de Janeiro by the then intervenor Walter Braga Netto, Bolsonaro’s vice president in the 2022 election.

In a passage from his text, published on an Army blog, Nunes states that “sometimes saying ‘no’ presupposes much more courage than aligning oneself with possible pressures of a political nature”. The material, entitled “The PSIC World and Military Ethics”, can be read here.

The commander speaks of an acronym he created, the PSIC, to talk about the informational environment in the contemporary world, which would be characterized by precipitation, superficiality, immediacy and turmoil.

According to him, these attacks, usually on social media and messaging apps, “have contributed to spreading misinformation, relativizing values ​​and, consequently, the disunity that weakens the spirit of the body.”

“The question remains: what interests do these people serve?”, asks the commander.

Haste, says Nunes, is a typical feature of this environment full of fake news, “where messages are fired and replicated without the slightest concern for the veracity of the facts and the suitability of the sources”.

Superficiality is at odds with military activity, which is, by nature, serious and complex, he says. Dealing with Army employment based on “simple analysis by occasional ‘experts’ is the surest way to arrive at inopportune, partial and ineffective conceptions”, writes Nunes.

Immediacy, in turn, would contrast with the permanent character attributed to the Armed Forces in the Constitution. According to him, the Army’s reputation, conquered over the centuries, cannot be harmed due to “the opportunism of some and the game of interests of others”.

Finally, the soldier describes the disturbance as the most harmful aspect among those he proposed to present. “Society’s excessive polarization and the action of the extremes of the ideological spectrum in the informational environment have generated radical views, resulting in a vicious circle of intolerance and the absolute absence of dialogue”, he analyzes.

For him, the situation is unacceptable to the Army, which, according to him, is a non-partisan institution, “which is proud to offer opportunities to all Brazilians, without distinction of social class, race, gender or creed.”
