Tarcísio will send a project to create military schools – 12/05/2023 – Panel

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP) intends to announce this Wednesday (6), during an event in Brasília, the sending of a bill to the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo to regulate civic-military schools in the state.

In July, when the Ministry of Education of Luiz Inácio da Lula da Silva (PT) decided to interrupt the federal program, Tarcísio stated that he would maintain the state project, which was inspired by what was launched in 2020 by Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Under this format, the disciplinary and extracurricular areas can be handled by the military and the pedagogical areas would continue with the Department of Education. The Security Secretariat must monitor the work of the military in educational institutions.

“Our management defends order and progress. And order is necessary to achieve progress. It is important that people learn values ​​such as discipline and respect from an early age”, says Arthur Lima, secretary of the Civil House of the São Paulo government.

“Of course, many careers ask you to think outside the box, but most professions require time to enter and leave. We want to restore discipline and quality education, we want students to respect the teacher in the classroom”, he says the secretary.

The project must cover the conversion of existing schools to the civic-military model and the creation of new units. The number of units that will follow this model and the implementation schedule have yet to be defined.

According to the Panel, the government intends to take into account some criteria to define which schools will change model: the approval of the school community, gauged through public consultation, and social vulnerability indexes, school flow (which must be lower than the average of the state) and academic performance (also below average).

São Paulo currently has only one state school that operates on the civic-military model, Marechal do Ar Eduardo Gomes, in Guarujá, in addition to seven other municipal schools.

Tarcísio’s project is also a nod to the Bolsonarist base, which has been putting pressure on him. In recent weeks, as the Panel has shown, deputies linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro have asked the governor to prioritize issues with which the group identifies, including civic-military schools,

The format proposed by Tarcísio is similar to the one implemented in Paraná. At the end of November, governor Ratinho Júnior (PSD) launched a popular consultation in 126 schools to define which ones would like to change their model.

Of the total, 82 (65%) preferred the change, while another 44 wanted to continue with the traditional model.
