Tarcísio wants to direct a film about Olavo on TV Cultura – 06/13/2023 – Panel

Culture Secretary of the Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicans), Marilia Marton suggested the nomination of Pernambuco filmmaker Josias Teófilo to the board of trustees of the Padre Anchieta Foundation, which maintains TV Cultura.

However, after an immediate reaction of disapproval from the foundation’s current advisors, he moved on to the next name on his list, Aldo Valentim (national secretary for the Creative Economy and Cultural Diversity of the Jair Bolsonaro government), whose nomination will be voted on by the council on Wednesday. (14).

Teófilo’s best-known work is the documentary “O Jardim das Aflições”, about the writer Olavo de Carvalho, of whom he was a student.

Marton nominated Josiah during the last board meeting on May 10. The suggestion generated immediate indignation among advisers, says the secretary to the Panel, who reports that some even stated that they would leave the body if the filmmaker became a peer.

In view of the reaction, the secretary decided to postpone the attempt until another vacancy arises and indicated the next name on her list, Aldo Valentim. She points out, however, that she has not given up and that she may try to nominate Josias in new opportunities.

The head of Culture claims that she followed instructions she received from the council itself when suggesting the name of Teófilo: to present someone with a diverse profile, young and belonging to the audiovisual sector.

“The phrases I heard there didn’t make the slightest sense. ‘What he does I don’t like’. I’m only tolerant with what I want to hear, with what I don’t want I’m not. I think part of the problem is the problem itself. advice to be mono. If it were multiple, its performance would be better”, he says to the column.

Appointed by the secretary, Valentim was national secretary for the Creative Economy and Cultural Diversity of the federal government between 2020 and 2022, a period in which he was responsible for implementing the Aldir Blanc law, and shares with the secretary the trajectory in the PSDB of São Paulo (of which both disaffiliated).

Master and doctoral student in public policy and university professor, Valentim has a technical profile and participated in toucan administrations in the City of São Paulo (2019, Deputy Secretary of Culture) and in the government of São Paulo (2018-2019, coordinator of planning and evaluation). Marton also points out that he is young (46 years old), black, Jewish and came from the periphery.

On the FPA board of trustees, nominations need the signatures of eight board members to be considered by the board as a whole, which has 43 members. On Wednesday (14), in addition to Aldo, other names indicated by other councilors who obtained support will be appreciated, such as those of the journalist and professor Eugênio Bucci and the professor and municipal secretary of Justice of São Paulo Eunice Aparecida de Jesus Prudente.

Teófilo classifies the episode as regrettable and says that, like the secretary, he intends to insist on trying to participate in the council, a function that is not remunerated.

“They [governo] They wanted to nominate me precisely to have diversity of thought. And diversity really has to be diversity. And some people on the board said they don’t sit with me, which is absurd. They have shown that they are not open to freedom of thought. This is absurd in an institution that receives public money”, says the filmmaker, director of “Nem Tudo Se Desfaz”, from 2021.

“Saying that you don’t sit with a person? I can vote for whoever I want, I can think whatever I want, there is freedom in this country. They mentioned that I made a film about Olavo. I wrote a book about cinema, I was awarded. I have all the qualifications”, says Teófilo, adding that he will call all the advisers to ask for explanations.

Although conservative and a voter of Jair Bolsonaro, Teófilo was a critic of the cultural management of the former president, especially the group of former Secretary of Culture Mário Frias (PL-SP), who today pressures the Tarcísio administration for more space and participation in the management of Marilia Marton. One of the main points of divergence between the filmmaker and the current federal deputy was Frias’ projects to void the Rouanet Law, repudiated by Teófilo.

The secretary says that her folder is a free speech space for everything and everyone, not just “the narrative of A or B”.

“I’m liberal. In my mind, liberalism involves respect for different lines. You ask me: are you an Olavist? I say no. Are there things by Olavo that I love? There are. Are you a Frankfurt School? No. But there are things from the Frankfurt School that I like. The study depends on the point of view you are having,” he says.

“People say he [Josias] he is radical because he likes Olavo. I like [filósofo inglês John] Locke. Everyone can like who they want.”

TV Cultura belongs to the Padre Anchieta Foundation, which was established by the government of São Paulo in 1969. The institution is maintained with public funds and own resources obtained through the private sector. One of the foundation’s goals is to convey information of public interest to the population.
