Tarcísio: society is conservative and Republicans are an option – 04/24/2023 – Politics

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said this Monday (24th) that Brazilian society is conservative and indicated that his party should place itself as an alternative to the center-right, since there is “a vacuum , an open space” on the political scene.

He stated that although “the other camp” won the presidential election, it was the right that elected more deputies, governors and senators. According to him, Brazilian society is “conservative, it is more to the center, more to the right, it values ​​free initiative and the market economy”.

“This voice has to be heard. There is a window for this party, for the Republicans, to occupy this space and show itself as a center-right alternative, a conservative alternative, a pro-market alternative, which is what our society wants and that is what will bring prosperity to our Brazil”, he said.

The governor participated in the national convention of the acronym in Brasília. At the event, the party’s president, Marcos Pereira, was re-elected to remain in charge of the party for the next four years.

Tarcísio’s statement came at a time when he said that the Government of São Paulo will support the tax reform and will work to make it a “success” —and that the Republicans will play a fundamental role “in this design of the future”.

“We are not afraid of taxation at the destination, nor could we, because we have the largest consumer market in Brazil. As much as we lose something at the beginning, we will gain up front. The balance and the end of the tax war is important for us Brazil.”

“We cannot have different ICMS rules in each state of the federation. Nobody can stand that”, he continued.

Earlier in the same event, Marcos Pereira signaled that the party will work to have a presidential candidate in 2026.

“In addition to the aspiration to solidly expand our benches of state and federal deputies, senators and elect new governors, we are going to work so that the Republicans have, finally, their own candidate for president”, he said.

In his speech, the leader also stated that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) should listen more to his deputy, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB). “I think President Lula should listen more to his deputy, as he listened to José Alencar and as, unfortunately, Bolsonaro did not listen to Hamilton Mourão.”

Pereira also made a nod to Lira, referring to him as “my friend, my brother” when he stated that there were no quarrels between the two, in reference to the formation of the blocks in the Chamber. “There is no block, there are no differences that can separate us.”

At the end of March, five center and right-wing parties created a bloc with 142 deputies, including the Republicans, which, until then, was a member of the trio that formed the centrão alongside Bolsonaro’s PL and the PP —a movement that split the center and affected Lira’s power in the House.

As a reaction, Lira attracted parties from the right and left, including parties that are from the base of the Lula government, and formed a block with 173 deputies, becoming the greatest force in the House.
