The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), sanctioned, this Tuesday (31), a law that provides free access to cannabidiol-based medicines by the Unified Health System (SUS) in the state of São Paulo.
The project, approved in December 2022 by the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp), is authored by state deputy Caio França (PSB). According to the enacted law, the objective is to provide medicines based on cannabidiol “in association with other cannabinoid substances, including tetrahydrocannabidiol, on an exceptional basis”, in the state.

Other intended objectives are to diagnose and treat patients whose treatment with substances based on cannabis substances is effective and to promote public policies for the debate and provision of this medicine. For Lucas Gualtieri, Public Prosecutor and coordinator of the Special Action Group to Combat Crime, the measure is positive, as it institutionalizes legal access to medicines and does not allow other abusive exploitation of cannabis.
“Informal access to these drugs is very dangerous and can lead to problems with overdose and extraction. From the moment that access to ready-made medication is institutionalized instead of granting access to the plant for the person to extract and do whatever they want without any control, I think the risk is the same as for any other substance already used in the pharmaceutical industry ”, he adds.
