The Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicans) made another cut in the budget for the Military Police body camera program.
This Friday’s Official Gazette (18) informs that R$ 11 million allocated to the program were allocated to ostensive and daily police actions by the PM.
A survey by the PT, PCdoB and PV federation at Alesp (Legislative Assembly of São Paulo) shows that the allocation has already been reduced from R$ 152 million to R$ 136 million.
So far, the government has spent only R$ 45 million of the estimated amount for the year for this purpose.
In the campaign, Tarcísio even promised to do away with the cameras. Questioned due to data that showed the reduction of police lethality and also the death of agents, he backed down.
Now, however, he has again been pressured by the Bolsonarist base to end the cameras, after the death of a Rota agent (Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar), in Guarujá (Baixada Santista).
The opposition, formed by leftist parties like PT and PSOL, resists what they see as Tarcísio’s scrapping of the program.
After the episode on the coast, the police killed 16 people in alleged clashes. However, most cases were not recorded on camera and there are reports of executions.
Images sent to the Public Ministry of São Paulo show records of confrontations with criminals in only 3 of the 16 cases in Operation Shield.
