Tarcísio announces programming in the curriculum of schools – 01/19/2023 – Educação

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), announced this Thursday (19) that he intends to include programming in the curriculum of high schools in the state network as early as 2024.

According to the governor, who is participating in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, technology giants such as Amazon, Microsoft and Meta have expressed interest in participating in the project.

“We want to put programming in all of our high schools because we understand that this is what will develop important skills that will open the door to a qualified job market,” Tarcísio told Brazilian journalists. As an example, he cited the possibility of including code in solving mathematical problems.

The governor stated that the big techs showed “great interest in helping with this technological education”. “They already have programs like this in several cities around the world, companies like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft.”

The project, however, still needs to be developed, and conversations with companies will continue, he said.

The digital divide in Brazilian education —and the resulting lack of technology professionals— was pointed out by the president of PwC in Brazil, Marco Castro, as one of the country’s main deficits in the face of the global market.

Tarcísio met this Thursday with the president for Latin America at Microsoft, Rodrigo Kede; on Wednesday (18) the meeting was with Nick Clegg, president of public affairs at Meta; and on Tuesday (17) with Michael Punke, vice president of global public policy at Amazon.

The governor has maintained an intense schedule of 39 bilateral meetings with executives and businessmen during the event, although he has not participated in any of the forum panels. He arrived in Davos on Sunday (15th) and leaves late this Thursday afternoon. The event ends this Friday (20).
