Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), governor of São Paulo, and Márcio França (PSB), Minister of Ports and Airports in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), held their first face-to-face meeting this Wednesday (8) to discuss privatization projects for the port of Santos.
Tarcísio has turned the privatization of the port into his own flag in recent years, and argues that it would increase the number of jobs in Baixada Santista. The process of privatization of the port of Santos was being forwarded by the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government and was under analysis by the TCU (Tribunal de Contas da União).
France, however, opposes the project and says that the port authority will remain state-owned. The Lula government highlights the strategic importance of the port.
At the meeting, the two presented their arguments on the subject for about two hours, in an atmosphere that was described as friendly.
The meeting was considered the first of several between Tarcísio and the federal government to address the issue.
