Few institutions open enrollment for college entrance exams in the second semester, and some candidates take the test just to train, but these factors do not necessarily reduce competition, which depends on the chosen course and faculty.

In case of approval, the possibility of holding the vacancy until the following year changes according to each faculty.

In order to answer the students’ questions, the Sheet spoke with coordinators of pre-university courses and institutions of higher education.

If a student passes the winter entrance exam before completing high school, is the approval valid for starting studies at the beginning of next year? It depends on the rules of each college. There are no reservations at Mackenzie, ESPM and PUC-SP, and students without completing high school can only take the test as trainees, according to the institutions.

São Camilo, on the other hand, allows the student to take the test now and use the result in the next semester’s selection, without taking the exam again, says Carlos Ferrara Junior, academic dean.

Faap offers the entrance exam in the advanced modality, in which third-year students, if approved, have a vacancy reserved for the beginning of 2024, says the CEO, Luís Sobral.

What is the step by step to be able to study via Fies and Prouni? For Prouni, according to the Ministry of Education, the candidate must have taken one of the last two editions of the Enem and have reached at least 450 points in the average of the five tests, in addition to not having zeroed the essay.

The program is aimed at those who do not have a higher education diploma and those who took the Enem as a trainee are not allowed to participate. The notice for the second half of 2023 has not yet been published.

To obtain financing via Fies, the student may have participated in any edition of the Enem from 2010 onwards. The average of the grades must be at least 450 points, and the candidate must not have written zero. Trainers cannot participate. The announcement for the second half of 2023 has not yet been released.

Does the winter race have less competition? It varies according to the desired institution and career, in addition to the number of vacancies open in the public notice, says Vera Lúcia da Costa Antunes, pedagogical coordinator of the preparatory course and Colégio Objetivo.

The volume of applicants and the variety of courses offered are usually smaller, but these factors do not necessarily reduce the ratio of competitors per vacancy, says Márcio Guedes, coordinator of the Poliedro course in São José dos Campos (SP).

Competition for the second semester at Mackenzie is smaller due to the volume of candidates who take the exam as trainees. At São Camilo, the number of subscribers is lower compared to the beginning of the year. At Faap, the number of vacancies is smaller than at the beginning of the year, but the proportion of candidates per vacancy is the same.

At PUC-SP, the number of entrance exams is also lower, but competition may be greater, because the number of vacancies is reduced, says Luciane Tudda, advisor for competitions at the rectory of PUC-SP.

Is the 2022 Enem score valid for these exams? Yes, and some also consider older editions. At Mackenzie, grades from 2020, 2021 and 2022 are valid. At Faap and PUC-SP, results from 2017 are considered. At São Camilo, it is possible to use grades obtained from 2010 onwards.

ESPM does not limit which edition can be used. When registering, the candidate must only inform which year the grade refers to.

If a student passed a university at the end of last year and did not enroll, do they have to take the test now to try again or do they have an advantage? It depends on the rules of each university. The Mackenzie entrance exam is valid only for the current semester — therefore, the student who was approved in the previous semester and did not enroll must take the test again. ESPM, Faap and PUC-SP adopt the same model.

At São Camilo, students who passed and did not enroll can use the results of the selection processes of the second entrance exam in 2021, both in 2022 and the first in 2023 to enter the current semester, without having to make new assessments.

Do public colleges have winter entrance exams? It depends on the institution. The entrance exam for Fatecs (Faculties of Technology of São Paulo) is open for enrollment until June 2nd.

Through Sisu (Unified Selection System), students compete for vacancies in public institutions with the Enem score, and each university defines admission criteria.

Can the student pass the entrance exam now, close the enrollment and then join the December class? In general, no, because universities usually require students to complete at least one semester before they can drop out of the course, says Guedes, from the Poliedro course.

This occurs at Mackenzie, São Camilo and PUC-SP, which do not allow suspension in the first semester. The ESPM only authorizes cases in which the student proves that he was drafted into the Armed Forces or presents a medical report attesting to the worsening of his health, says Jane de Freitas Mündel, responsible for the marketing and market intelligence area.

At Faap, it’s possible. Those approved can enroll, lock it and, in December, re-enroll to start the course in February 2024, explains Sobral.

In private schools, is the monthly fee for new entrants different from that charged for those joining in the first semester? Normally, no, as happens at Mackenzie, São Camilo, ESPM, Faap and PUC-SP.

Is there a difference in the style of tests adopted now compared to the end of the year? No. The steps, the style of the tests and the level of the questions are the same in the assessments applied in the two periods at Mackenzie, São Camilo, ESPM, Faap and PUC-SP.

Should student preparation for these tests be different? What are the main points of attention? Yes, because those who haven’t finished high school may not have gone through all the topics covered in the exam, even if they are taking a pre-college preparatory course, says Guedes, from Poliedro. “The student has to be able to do in one semester what would be passed in a whole year”, he says.

In addition, in order for students to retain the necessary content for the tests, it is necessary to manage their time well in the first semester, since the preparation period is shorter, says João Pitoscio Filho, pedagogical coordinator of the Stage course.
