Survey shows that for 54% of Brazilians, culture is a source of well-being

Brazilians started to do more cultural activities in 2023 compared to 2022

Manaus (AM) – The fourth edition of the “Cultural Habits” survey, carried out by Fundação Itaú in partnership with Datafolha, shows that culture is a source of well-being for Brazilians and is helping people face and prevent mental health issues. Art helps to improve relationships at home and at work, and reduces the feeling of loneliness and sadness.

According to the survey, culture is cited by 54% of individuals as the activity that provides the most well-being, followed by other leisure activities (parks, churches, beaches, outings) and physical and sporting activities, both accounting for 19% of answers. 3% mentioned series and soap operas in particular, and 9% were unable to provide information. The survey interviewed 2,405 people aged 16 to 65 in all regions of the country, through in-person and telephone interviews, between September 1st and 28th, 2023.

Of the 54% who see well-being in culture, 18% say that cinema is their favorite activity to feel good, followed by attending shows and music festivals (15%) and going to the theater (12%). Listening to music and dancing accounted for 9% of mentions and going to museums accounted for 4% of mentions, the same rate for generic cultural activities. Reading was reported by 3% – a reflection of the low reading rates in Brazil, unfortunately.

According to the Fundação Itaú/Datafolha survey, 61% fully agreed that cultural programs reduce stress, 58% say they improve relationships at home, 61% say it reduces the feeling of sadness. 57% report that cultural activities improve their quality of life, 61% indicate a reduction in loneliness and 50% say they help improve relationships at work.

According to the survey, 42% of those interviewed stated that they had had some mental health problem in the last 12 months and, of these, 63% had sought some type of treatment. Also according to the research, women (53%) were more affected by metal and emotional health issues than men (30%). The incidence was also higher among individuals from classes D and E (51%) than among those interviewed from classes A and B (33%).

The occurrence was also higher among individuals aged 25 to 34 years (53%), followed by the groups aged 16 to 24 and 45 to 65 years, both with 42%. The group aged 35 to 44 years had a 34% incidence. Of the total number of people affected, 55% are out of work. Geographically, 45% of those affected live in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro; and 37% in the RM of São Paulo. Considering by region, 50% are from the Northeast.

More culture

Brazilians started to do more cultural activities in 2023 compared to 2022, according to the survey. The survey found that 96% of respondents declared having carried out cultural activities in 2023, both online and in person. When asked if they carried out the activities before 2023, the verified rate is 89%.

Listening to music and watching films and series on streaming platforms are the cultural activities most carried out by Brazilians: 82% of respondents declared having listened to music on digital platforms in 2023. The consumption of podcasts was another highlight of the survey. The product has become popular with Brazilians and 48% of those interviewed say they have carried out this type of activity in 2023.

The reading of online books and ebooks also experienced growth, according to the Datafolha/Fundação Itaú survey. Reading these products on screens jumped from 30% of individuals in 2022 to 42% of the sample in the 2023 survey.
