Students back to school in the Federal District, in an archive image by TV Globo/Reproduction A survey to assess the perception of safety in teaching units in the Federal District, released this Monday (3) shows that more than 70% of people consider ” unsafe” public schools in the capital. Data were collected by the ObservaDF public policy observatory, linked to the University of Brasília (UnB). According to the survey, 44.3% of those interviewed said they found the public schools in the DF “very unsafe” and 29.7% considered the places “a little unsafe”. Only 5.2% said they found the schools “very safe”. See the chart below: Private schools Regarding private schools, the total number of people who classified schools as “very unsafe” or “a little unsafe” does not reach 30%. “In other words, the perception of insecurity in schools in the DF seems to be a phenomenon mainly in public schools”, says ObservaDF. Day or night? The survey also assessed whether the perception of safety in public schools in the DF is felt inside and outside the units – during the day or at night: 54.9% consider the surroundings of the schools very unsafe at night 46% consider the interior of the schools very insecure at night 30.8% consider the inside of schools very unsafe, even during the day 39.3% consider the surroundings of schools unsafe during the day “It seems that the school is seen as a focus of insecurity even if this insecurity is not is related to school activities (that is, more focused on its surroundings and at times when the school does not work)”, highlights the observatory. Furthermore, we point out that the sample for some locations may be small, which also affects results”, says the ObserveDF. Most common occurrences Student shadow, in archive image Kilvia Muniz/SVM The survey also identified the main events that occurred in the last 12 months with children under 18 years of age, by type of school, who attend classes and who live with the respondent of the search. They are, from most to least common: Insult, humiliation or name-calling Threat of physical aggression, pushing or kicking Frightening or stalking Slander, rumors and offenses on social media Someone offering drugs Robbery or theft Touching and groping without consent Injury caused by an object thrown Threat with a knife or gun Stabbing or shooting Regarding the security policy aimed at schools, most respondents do not believe that the current management of the DF government has acted to improve security in its schools and daycare centers: More than 60% observed changes in public policies About 10% believe that the government’s actions contributed to a worsening of this security Increase the presence of police around schools and daycare centers Foster a culture of peace Increase the offer of cultural and sports activities at school outside of class hours For those interviewed, the main measures listed to improve the perception of safety in schools are: The least important measure is to provide weapons and training to teachers to deal with situations of violence in schools. “That is, what the data seems to suggest is that respondents prefer solutions that bring security to schools in an integrated way with public safety policy, but that does not necessarily imply bringing this into schools directly”, points out the ObservaDF. Methodology To carry out the research, a collection of primary data was carried out in May 2023, with the application of a questionnaire to a sample of 1001 people. Of the interviewees, half (50%) declared living with school-age children under 18 years of age. Most (25%) of these minors belonged to elementary school, both in the early and final years (14%).
