Supreme Court condemns 15 more defendants on January 8; total about to 116

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) sentenced this Friday (1st) another 15 defendants accused of participating in the demonstrations on January 8, 2023, the date on which the headquarters of the Three Powers were invaded. Since the start of the trial, in September last year, the Court has already sentenced 116 people for what happened.

In the trials that ended this Friday, the vote of the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, prevailed, who proposed sentences ranging from 14 to 17 years in prison for the accused. He was followed by ministers Cármen Lúcia, Dias Toffoli, Flávio Dino, Gilmar Mendes and Luiz Fux.

Ministers Cristiano Zanin and Edson Fachin also followed, but defended lower penalties than those proposed by the rapporteur. The president of the STF, Luís Roberto Barroso, voted to convict the defendants on four crimes. Ministers André Mendonça and Nunes Marques voted for the acquittal of the defendants or lesser sentences.

In total, the Supreme Court received 1,345 complaints from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). Of this total, 1,113 were suspended so that the PGR can assess whether it will propose agreements that avoid conviction.
