Support for the January 8 CPMI remains and the opposition awaits the reading of the application this Tuesday

Opposition parliamentarians managed to maintain the minimum number of signatures for the opening of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8, despite an effort by the government base to provoke a bloc of supporters on the night of this Monday (17 ), eve of the first session of Congress.

According to Deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE), author of the commission’s request, at the turn of the night to the morning of this Tuesday (18) the signatures of 194 deputies and 35 senators were counted, against the need for 171 and 27, respectively. According to Fernandes, only deputy Alberto Mourão (MDB-SP) withdrew his signature on Monday night, while three more parliamentarians signed the application.

The commission proposes to investigate those responsible and the federal authorities that were omitted in the acts of vandalism in Brasilia. But the installation will only take place when the president of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), reads the request in a joint session between deputies and senators, scheduled for this Tuesday (18).

At the meeting of leaders of the House and Senate on Monday night, to discuss vetoes and other agendas, the oppositionists demanded that Pacheco renew his commitment to reading the application. The leader of the government Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) made a statement contrary to the CPMI, claiming that the collegiate could disturb the economic agenda, while the justice institutions are advancing in the investigation of the episodes.

Despite this, oppositionists fear that there may be a second attack this Tuesday, as the common regiment of the Chamber and the Senate still allows support to be withdrawn and added until midnight of the same day of the reading of the application.

“The meeting of congressional leaders made it clear that the joint session is in place. We have enough signatures and the CPMI will happen”, said the deputy. He acknowledges that even after reading the application, the day will be intense, marked by the battle against the government’s final attacks.

On Monday night, Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), from the opposition, said that the meeting between Congress leaders “was smooth and resulted in consensus built from dialogue, aiming at holding a productive first session joint 2023 scheduled for noon”. He also stated that “there is no climate for further postponement [da sessão do Congresso]” and that “the country expects the president of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco, to install the CPMI as soon as possible”.

Congress will analyze vetoes by Lula and Bolsonaro

Among the vetoes that will be analyzed in the first session of Congress, some are from 2021 and others more recent, including seven from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Among the most anticipated items is Veto 46/2021, which deals with changes in the Law on Crimes against the Democratic State of Law, which revoked the former National Security Law, created during the military dictatorship. This veto is related to the attacks on the headquarters of the three Powers, on January 8.

The veto, imposed by former President Jair Bolsonaro, prevented an increase in the sentence for military personnel involved in crimes against the Democratic State of Law, in addition to typifying the crime of attacking the right to demonstrate, with a penalty that could reach 12 years of imprisonment. . Other hypotheses of increasing the penalty for crimes against the democratic rule of law were also vetoed.
