Sugarcane technology requires less planting area – 06/07/2023 – Vaivém

The average productivity of Brazilian sugarcane fields should increase by 33% in the coming years with the arrival of new technologies for producers. With this, the country will guarantee a greater volume of sugarcane with a reduction in the need for area expansion.

Currently at 75 tons per hectare, the Brazilian field could reach a productivity of 100 tons in 2040, according to the CTC (Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira).

The new technologies to be made available by science will generate 22 million more CBIos (Biofuel Decarbonization Credit) in the period and guarantee a more sustainable agriculture, with a reduction in the use of diesel, fertilizers and chemical products, according to the company.

The CTC sustainability report shows that the increase in productivity will have a land-saving effect of at least 3 million hectares in the period. This area that will no longer be sown corresponds to 36% of the total that the country currently uses for the production of sugarcane.

For the CTC, the increase in productivity is based on genetic improvement technologies, biotechnology and new planting solutions.

Brazil is a world leader in the production of sugarcane, a raw material that has also become important for the production of renewable energy. This year, it will have a 19% share in the energy matrix.

The company has one of the largest sugarcane germplasm banks in the world, with more than 4,000 varieties.

Income rises 6.7% in agriculture

In the wake of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of agriculture, which grew 19% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, the real income from work had an effective evolution of 6.7% in the same period.

The current scenario shows a different situation from the pandemic years, when the sector lost income. The data are from Ipea (Institute of Applied Economic Research), based on the Continuous-PNAD (Continuous National Household Sample Survey).

Effective income in agriculture had fallen by 2.4% in the first quarter of 2021 and remained stable in the same period of 2022. According to a study by Ipea, the more informal sectors, which had been the hardest hit during the pandemic, now show growth of more intense income.

Agriculture and services are among them, according to the institute.
