Students at the University of São Paulo (USP) decided on Monday night (9) to remain on strike. The movement began on September 21st, motivated by the lack of teachers. Students from all USP units in the state capital joined the strike. The students decided to maintain the strike after meeting with the rectory and holding an assembly.
The meeting took place at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH), in Butantã, West Zone of the capital of São Paulo. For students, despite advances, the guidelines have not yet been completely met by the institution’s rectory, informed the Estadão. A new meeting with the rectory is scheduled for this Tuesday (10), at 2 pm. Furthermore, a new assembly was scheduled for this Wednesday (11).
Last Friday (6), the USP Polytechnic School, responsible for training engineers, approved the end of the strike at the unit. USP committed to hiring 148 temporary teachers within 45 days to try to contain the movement. The polytechnics accepted the proposal from the university management.
Last week, members of the Faculty Association of the University of São Paulo (Adusp) announced that they would await the decision of the students’ assembly, held this Monday, and would maintain the strike until at least this Tuesday (10). According to Adusp, the teaching staff at the university has reduced by approximately 18%, around a thousand teachers, since 2014. In some units, the lack of teachers would have reached the level of 30%.
