Student from the state public network represents the Amazon in the Small Geniuses of the Globo network

Manaus (AM) – Student Luan Gama, 10 years old, from the State School (EE) Libertador Simon Bolívar, located in the central-south zone of Manaus, will represent Amazonas in the painting “Little Geniuses”, of the program “Domingão com Huck”, of Rede Globo. The attraction will air this Sunday (7/9), at 5 pm (Manaus time).

Luan will be the first child from Amazonas to participate in the program, which brings together students from different states. For the little genius, who learned to read at age 3 and excels in Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, Portuguese and Geography, the expectation of participating in the dispute is great.

“I invite everyone to watch Sunday and also to cheer for me. I will represent our state being one of the Little Geniuses of 2023. I am very happy with this opportunity”,

said the child.

The student also said that when the Sunday program debuted, he realized that he could solve the mathematical expressions presented in the program with ease. “Sometimes, I spoke the correct answer before the participants and asked my mother to sign me up”, reported Luan.

For Luan’s mother, Lara Gama, her son’s selection to participate in the program was a surprise. She said that at first she only entered the little genius at his request, but that she thought that the participants’ choices were all “cards marked” and that they would not reach Luan.

“I was really surprised. I made a very unpretentious application. I filled out the form in a very basic way. They not only analyzed my son’s application, but also contacted them remotely, conducted interviews and tests remotely, and then the news of the selection arrived”,

told Lara Gama.

And he added that at just 3 years old Luan learned to read and at 4 years old he was already performing math operations, such as multiplication, division, calculations with power and square root.

“When he was 4 years old, the pedagogue at the school, at the time, met Luan, through my sister, who studied at the school. Talking to him, the pedagogue realized that he had, according to her, high abilities close to giftedness”,

recalled Lara.

Luan entered the Simon Bolivar school in the 1st year of Elementary School, and began to develop in motor skills and writing. And in the 2nd year, seeing the boy’s performance, both the teacher and the pedagogue recommended that he move on to the next grade, but due to the pandemic it was not possible.

Currently, the student is in the 5th year of Elementary School and among his main skills are: knowledge of the flags and location of all countries in the world, mastery of mathematical calculations, in addition to spelling words, of a high level of difficulty, backwards.

little genius

In the period of the pandemic, studying at home, both the mother and Luan began to follow television programs more often. And, on one of those days, Lara came across the painting “Little Geniuses”, in its first edition. At the time, her mother tried to enroll her son, but was unable to due to the deadline.

“He was 7 or 8 years old when there was the first edition. Just when we tried to sign up there was no more time. The first edition was all ready and the second had already ended the term. With the worsening of the pandemic, registration for the third edition was only opened in September last year”,

explained the mother.

Since September 2022, after enrolling, Luan, as well as the other participants, have gone through interviews with producers, psychopedagogues and psychologists who have mapped the children’s areas of greatest skill.

In February of this year, the news broke that he had been selected for the program. From there, the training process began, in which exercises are sent according to the child’s skill area.

Support in and out of school

In addition to relying on his mother, family and friends, Luan has the fundamental support of teacher Glória Mota, from the school where he studies. With more than 20 years of teaching experience, the teacher says that she adapts activities according to the needs and specialties of her students, and that was the case with Luan.

“Luan has many skills with calculation and logical reasoning. Like all geniuses, he is very practical, but sometimes practicality is not enough. So, we teachers have to know the method of how to reach these students, to make everything more interesting, even though they already know a lot of things”,

explained the teacher.

A child loved by his colleagues and teachers, the little genius was nicknamed “Luan, the mathematician”, however, the teacher stressed that treatment at school is the same for all students.

“He is a lovely child and very smart, but I always treat him the same as everyone else and that makes a huge difference. I never let Luan understand that he was different or superior to his colleagues. I always try to listen to what he is going to say and I allow him to listen to his colleagues too”,

said.

Luan’s mother, Lara Gama, highlighted that teacher Glória Mota has made a difference in the little one’s school life. According to her, before, her son was not so interested in going to school. “He was bored. He didn’t want to go to class. There was a lot left. But this year, with teacher Glória, he changed. She works with him in a way that encourages him to want to go to school. She teaches, welcomes, listens and knows how to deal with his feelings. We are very grateful to her and to Simon Bolivar’s pedagogue”.

The news of the student’s participation in the global program was given by Luan to his friends, in the classroom, and now the school is united in rooting for the little genius who, without a doubt, is already taking his first steps towards a promising future possible career in medicine, a profession he responds to having chosen until then, when asked about “what to be when you grow up”.
