But, despite the joy of having secured a place at college, his dream of pursuing a career involving applied mathematics now only survived on the results of the Provão Paulista. The choice of career, according to him, occurred during his first year of high school. “I was thinking about being a civil engineer, but I didn’t really like the area when I researched. Then I saw that I have a more analytical outlook, so I thought: ‘applied mathematics’.” All forms in Provão In the new entrance exam of the State Department of Education (Seduc-SP), he placed computer science at USP as the first option, statistics at USP as the second option and computer engineering at Unesp as the third option. Then I got really discouraged. And I started studying hard. Now I’m here.” (Matheus da Silva, approved at USP by Provão Paulista) His approval strategy was to take advantage of the opportunities that the school offered, including attending mock essays, which, according to him, paralyze the entire school to ensure student participation. “I didn’t study in the traditional way, which is you study the theory and then apply it to the exercises”, he explained. “I did the exercises straight away, took the questions that were wrong and studied them, then I improved my correct answers a lot.” Closer ties between school and university In an interview with SP2, professor Aluisio Segurado, dean of Undergraduate Studies at USP, explained that the university is happy with the result of the first edition of Provão Paulista. According to him, the idea of ​​the new entrance exam is to react to the low participation of students from state schools in São Paulo in the selection processes for higher education. Segurado says that a survey by USP showed that, in the 2023 edition of Fuvest, only 8% of students from the state network participated in the tests. In Enem 2022, which should be more accessible, this rate was just 16%, the second worst participation among all state and district networks in the country. “The main objective is to give more opportunities to young people regardless of their family background and socioeconomic situation”, explained Segurado. “And recognize talents, because the test is competitive and merit is always essential. But that talents are recognized and given the opportunity they deserve to build a life project that includes USP, Unicamp and Unesp as a possibility.”
