The ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) have again postponed the judgment of the action that intends to decriminalize the possession of drugs for personal use, which was on the agenda of this Thursday (6/1). The postponement occurred due to the visit of the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, to the magistrates.

As a result, the plenary session of the Court had a reduced duration, and the trial of the action was rescheduled for June 21. Magistrates have been judging the case since 2015, when an extraordinary appeal by the São Paulo Public Defender’s Office challenged the punishment specifically provided for those who “acquire, store, have in storage, transport or bring with them, for personal consumption, drugs without authorization or in disagreement with legal determination”.

Until the trial was interrupted, still in 2015, ministers Edson Fachin, Roberto Barroso and Gilmar Mendes had already voted against the article that criminalizes possession for personal use.
