STF ministers visit January 8 prisoners; family members protest in front of the OAB

The President of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Rosa Weber, and Minister Alexandre de Moraes visited this Monday (10) those arrested for involvement in the acts of January 8 at Complexo da Papuda. The two “listened to the detainees, inspected the conditions of the penitentiary and assessed the conditions of food distributed – Minister Alexandre de Moraes even tasted the food”, informed the Court.

Ministers told prisoners “that due process of law is being followed and that all cases are being assessed individually by the Supreme Court.” They also spoke with other inmates not involved in 8 January. Last month, Weber and Moraes had already visited the women detained in the Colmeia prison.

The ministers were received by the holder of the Criminal Execution Court of Brasília, Judge Leila Cury, by the director of the Provisional Detention Center II, Marcelo Praxedes, and by Elton Fontele de Lima, representative of the State Department of Penitentiary Administration (Seape) of the District Federal. The prison management requested a greater number of police officers in the prison complex.

This Tuesday, relatives of those arrested on January 8 read an open letter in front of the headquarters of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), in Brasília. In the document, they advocate an “impartial, fair and prompt investigation”.

“We will never defend impunity. What we seek is Justice, punishment in the exact measure of any crimes committed”, says an excerpt from the letter. Family members also say that “among those arrested for more than 90 days, there are an elderly person with cancer who needs to wear a diaper, elderly people with comorbidities, autistic people, mothers with children under 12 years old, people with psychological, cardiac, diabetic and debilitated problems. motor”.

“Such situations have already been presented countless times with the due reports to the Justice and were ignored… Our main request is for the freedom of our family members, even if it is with precautionary measures, that they return home, take care of their family members and work. We are not asking for impunity, but that each one responds for their individual act, they are people with no criminal record, the main providers of the families”, they say.

The Supreme Court will start judging whether the first 100 accused of involvement in the acts of vandalism on the 8th of Iran will become defendants. The review is scheduled to begin April 18.
