State Council for the Environment discusses projects aimed at the energy sector of Amapá – News of Brazil

The State Council for the Environment (Coema) addressed this Wednesday, 26, the social, economic and environmental impacts of projects that bring forecasts of structural and operational changes in the energy system of Amapá. The discussion took place at the Secretary of State for the Environment (Sema).
This was Coema’s second meeting in 2023. Representatives of the undertakings, Sema licensing technicians, and members of the council, which is composed of public authorities and civil society entities, were present. The event also featured online participation by members of the Central Electric Power Stations of Northern Brazil (Eletronorte).
At the meeting, the representatives of the companies presented the main points foreseen for the execution of the activities. Among the projects is the proposed expansion of the Hydroelectric Plant Coaracy Nunes, in Ferreira Gomes, focused on the production of energy from hydraulic generation, meeting the demand of the National Interconnected System (SIN), with the start of works scheduled for next year.
The works foresee the generation of 2.4 thousand direct and indirect jobs and a restructuring of the system, avoiding failures and blackouts. According to the Tractebel, company responsible for carrying out the activities, the works will be concentrated in the area of the enterprise itself and there will be no need to relocate families or communities.
There was also an explanation of the Rio Matapi Thermoelectric Plant project, to be installed next to the Industrial District of Santana. The proposal is to supply energy from the burning of natural gas, using a modern technology called the Combined Cycle. Among the benefits for Amapá, the company highlighted energy security, with the ability to supply all the state’s demand, in addition to generating jobs and income.
The president of Coema and manager of Sema, Taísa Mendonca, coordinated the meeting. “All considerations are analyzed in accordance with the commitment of the Government of Amapá to promote economic development with social and environmental responsibility”he emphasized.
For the professor at the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap), Marcelo Oliveira, The discussion is important to ensure both the integrity of natural resources and the security of undertakings in the state, as a way of achieving sustainable development.
“As an adviser, representing the academy, we understand the importance of Coema meetings and discussions to guarantee and assist in the environmental policy and in the decision-making process, above all, in relation to environmental licensing”said the professor.
