State cedes building for resocialization project of the Court of Justice of Amapá – News of Brazil

The governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís, signed this Monday, 27th, during a meeting at the Palácio do Setentrião, the Term of Cooperation with the Court of Justice of Amapá (Tjap), ceding the Asa Center building for a period of 10 years. Open, located in the Pacoval neighborhood, for the installation of the Social Reintegration Center, a project by the Association for the Protection and Assistance of Convicts (APAC) that has the support of the judiciary.
“We are giving up this space, which was completely abandoned, so that it can house this Center, which has a very important role, which is to resocialize”highlighted the governor.
With the signing of the term, the Social Reintegration Center that currently operates on Avenida Goiás, in Pacoval, will be transferred to the space where the Asa Aberta Center used to operate. The Court of Criminal Executions and Alternative Measures of Macapá will provide resources to finance the renovation and adaptation services of the building.
“Today, a prisoner costs around R$3,000 on average for the State, at APAC, it costs approximately R$1,500, that is, half the amount. Not to mention that the rate of recidivism in crime by convicts who are part of the project is only 15%. While in the common system, recidivism exceeds 85%. So, it is very worthwhile in every way to invest in this project. And in this way, we are fulfilling our role”, highlighted the president of Tjap, judge Adão Carvalho.
What is APAC
APAC is the Association for the Protection and Assistance of Convicts, also called “Loving your neighbor, you will love Christ”. Founded by a group of Christian volunteers, it follows a resocialization model for convicts who are serving sentences in closed, semi-open and open regimes, so that the detainee follows the rules of the institution and participates in all daily activities ranging from domestic services to lectures on valuing life.
“The methodology is totally different from the common prison system. Just to give you an idea, the security that exists is not even for them to escape, but for other people not to enter the space. Within APAC we managed to offer the 12 elements that make up the association’s methodology. The convict wakes up at six in the morning and retires at twenty-two hours. During this period, he performs various activities. That’s why he doesn’t cost the same amount as a common prisoner, because he’s the one who offers the labor, everything is done for them”pointed out the president of APAC, Eliana Aranha.
