The WTT Contender main bracket disputes, stage of the world table tennis circuit, began at 10 am (Brasília time) this Thursday (10), at Arena Carioca I, in the Olympic Park, in Barra da Tijuca, west zone from Rio de Janeiro. For the first time in Brazil, the event brings together 120 athletes from 35 countries, including 25 Brazilians (14 men and 11 women), including Hugo Calderano, number 5 in the world and favorite for the title. The winners guarantee 400 points in the ranking of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), one of the parameters for qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In the men’s singles competition, in addition to Calderano from Rio de Janeiro, there are others well ranked, such as South Korea’s Jang Woo-jin (8th) and Germany’s Dimitrijj Ovtcharov (10th). In the women’s competition, the best positioned are the Japanese Hina Hayata (8th), the Puerto Rican Adriana Diaz (12th), the Romanian Bernadette Szocks (13th) and the Taiwanese Cheng I-Ching (15th).
In the individual disputes, Brazil will have Calderano, Vitor Ishiy, Guilherme Teodoro – who secured a spot in the qualifying round – the sisters Bruna and Giulia Takahashi, Bruna Alexandre and Laura Watanabe. In addition to them Carlos Ishida, Eric Jouti and Victoria Strassburger also represent Brazil in the main phase, but in the doubles disputes. São Paulo Victor Ishiy (104th) participates as a guest in organizing the event.
The WTT Contender in Rio started last Monday (7), with qualifying disputes that lasted until this Wednesday (9). To advance to the main stage, athletes needed to win three matches. The finals of the tournament will be on Sunday (13), from 18h.
