Ten years after hosting a stage of the WEC (World Endurance Championship) for the last time, São Paulo will once again host the FIA (International Federation of Motor Sport) endurance racing world championship in 2024.

This Friday (9), during an official trip to France, mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and LMEM (Le Mans Endurance Management), organizer of the WEC, sign the contract for the city to have a stage of the competition for the next five years.

The announcement of the agreement will be made during an event that precedes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most traditional stage of the World Championship and it will be one hundred years old this weekend.

The 6 Hours of São Paulo, as the event in São Paulo will be called, is the only race planned in South America for now and the fifth stage of next year. The official season calendar has not yet been released, but the race is expected to take place on the 12th, 13th and 14th of July.

A Sheetthe president of SPTuris, Gustavo Pires, said that the municipality will not pay the “fee”, as the fee paid to event owners is called – which happens, for example, with F1.

As the race will be held at Interlagos, the management of Ricardo Nunes also says that there will only be investment in adapting the race track and in temporary structures.

Questioned by the report about the financial return that the capital could obtain from the event, the management of the emedebista informed that it is still not possible to estimate this impact because the organizers need to deliver the event proposal, detailing the assembly of temporary structures, such as bleachers and areas of coexistence, so that the economic impact can be calculated.

In the past, the “endurance” championship landed in São Paulo on three occasions, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and had audiences of 25,000, 38,000 and 55,000 people, respectively.

In March of this year, when the city hosted a Formula E stage for the first time, the organization’s expectation was that the electric car race would have an audience of 25,000 people on the street circuit set up at the Anhembi Sambódromo —in the final balance after the stage, the FE indicated 23 thousand gifts.

With an initial estimate of 25 thousand, Ricardo Nunes stated that it was possible to expect a movement of at least R$ 300 million with tourism in the city.

Just to hold the race, however, São Paulo had to spend BRL 38 million, BRL 30 million of which for the assembly of temporary structures and BRL 8 million for carrying out road adaptation works, according to the city hall itself.

The agreement to receive the world category of electric single seaters, signed in 2022, also provides for one race per year in the city until 2027. From 2024, the annual amount to pay for the race will be R$ 22 million. According to the city hall, the reduction is possible due to the reuse of structures acquired for this year’s stage.

In the pre-campaign phase to be re-elected in the 2024 municipal elections, Ricardo Nunes has sought to link his image to the holding of major sporting events.

In March, the emedebist took advantage of the FE’s unprecedented presence in the city to reaffirm the promise he made to include around 2,600 new electric buses in the capital’s fleet.

According to the city hall, the concessionaire companies submitted requests for the purchase of 2,152 vehicles, which should be delivered between 2023 and 2024.

For Nunes’ management, the contracts signed with FE and WEC reinforce São Paulo’s position as one of the most important markets in South America and “keep the city in evidence as the only one in the world to host the three biggest shows FIA cars”, says Gustavo Pires.

In addition to FE and WEC, São Paulo has a contract to host an F1 event until 2025. This year’s race will take place on November 5th.

ticket sales

According to the City Hall, tickets for the 6 Hours of São Paulo will be available from October 1, 2023, with prices starting at R$250.

Five Brazilians compete in the current season and will participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend, the fourth stage of the calendar. They are: Felipe Nasr, Luis Felipe Derani, Pietro Fittipaldi, André Negrão and Daniel Serra.
