SP councilor files CPI to investigate “trans children” at USP

São Paulo councilor Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil) obtained the necessary signatures this Wednesday (1st) to file the opening of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) of the house on the use of children and adolescents in sex reassignment treatments in an outpatient clinic at Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of USP.

He started the protocol on Monday, quickly surpassing the minimum number of 19 signatures — 26 councilors have signed so far, according to the advisory of the municipal parliamentarian. The request is in the hands of the mayor, Milton Leite, Rubinho’s party colleague.

In the understanding of the councilor, children are being treated as “true laboratory guinea pigs”, “included in this type of procedure by decision and influence of third parties”. Among the treatments are the so-called “social transition”, in which the child starts using another name and changes clothes (not included in the CPI), the administration of hormones of the opposite sex from the age of 16 with the consent of parents or guardians, and even blocking puberty before that — this can only be done, according to the guidelines of the Federal Council of Medicine, on an experimental basis. Surgical interventions such as changing the genitalia and removing the breasts can only be performed after the age of 18.

One suspicion is that the CFM’s authorization for scientific research may be being used as a loophole for medical indication of puberty blockade with drugs, which is not provided for by the package leaflet of these drugs and does not have sufficient evidence of safety, as explained by the People’s Gazette in matters for which the outpatient clinic has been contacted, but has not yet responded.

The CPI is a reaction to a report by G1 that reported that almost 300 children and adolescents undergo the transsexualization process at the Transdisciplinary Clinic for Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation (Amtigos). One hundred are children from four to 12 years old who may be in a puberty block queue. G1 interviewed some of these young people, including an eight-year-old child whose mother claimed that she has been showing signs of being a “trans child” since she was two years old.

Studies show that up to 90% of children who have gender dysphoria resolve over time without the need for a sex change. Therefore, the term “trans child” is risky and can unduly interfere with their development by referring these children to the transsexualization process when this is not necessarily the most appropriate treatment for them, putting them in a position to take medication for the rest of their lives. .
