Solidarity expels mayor who suggested ‘castrating girls’ for birth control

Manager made a statement after announcing the opening of a daycare center in the city
The leadership of the Solidariedade party (RJ) decided to expel the mayor of the municipality of Barra do Piraí, Mário Esteves, from the party’s ranks. The manager of the city in southern Rio de Janeiro defended, on Thursday (14), that the city’s “girls” be “castrated” to control the local population.
The party’s regional leadership was unanimous. In a statement released this Sunday (17), the state president of Solidariedade, deputy Aureo Ribeiro, classified the speech as misogynistic (prejudice or hatred against women) and “total disrespect” towards them.
The mayor’s statement, during a public event in the city in the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro, had repercussions on social media.
“There is no shortage of children in Barra do Piraí. Where’s Dione? [secretário de Saúde]? We have to start neutering these girls. Control this population. It’s a lot of kids, man,” said Esteves, after announcing the opening of a daycare center in the city.

Honestly, I don’t even know what to say when I hear this. It’s funny that women need to be CASTRATED, but men don’t, right? Woman must have a baby alone pic.twitter.com/QoeAMMlDyw

Mayor Mário Esteves spoke out on social media after the criticism and said he got the terms wrong.
“I recognize the mistake in changing the technical term – ‘tubal ligation’ for ‘castration’”, he wrote. “However, this does not diminish the importance of the issue. What should be on the agenda was family planning. This is the subject that needs to be in the headlines — and not the exchange in a technical term. Unfortunately, today, any misplaced word can turn into barbarity in the hands of people with bad intentions.”
This Sunday, he returned to the internet to ask for empathy and say that words do not always reflect true intentions. “In the age of instant communication, a simple misunderstanding can trigger ruthless judgment. It’s crucial to remember that words don’t always reflect true intentions. Our society needs a greater dose of empathy and a dash less of snap judgment,” he wrote.
Solidariedade also expelled lawyer Hery Waldir Kattwinkel Junior. He defended, in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), accused of involvement in the coup attacks on January 8th. According to the party, the lawyer used ‘offensive and disrespectful speech’ to the STF and ‘exceeded the limits of the law’.
