The Ministry of Health allocated R$3.8 billion to the Brasil Sorridente oral health program in 2024, which will allow 22.8 million beneficiaries to be included in dental care through the SUS (Unified Health System).
The forecast is that, in 2024, 8,069 new oral health services and teams will be offered, in addition to the purchase of new equipment, such as dental chairs and dental ultrasound, for example. With this, the program, recreated in May by President Lula (PT), will be able to cover 127 million people.
The ministry also foresees an adjustment of up to 188% of the amounts allocated to states and municipalities to pay for services — stagnant since 2016. The expectation is that, with the increase, more managers will join the program.
The department also wants to enable 300 new Mobile Dental Units, which would bring the number to 404. The intention is to expand service in regions that are difficult to access. Another goal is to create 800 new Oral Health Specialty Services, which are implemented in municipalities with up to 20 thousand inhabitants.
