Site attributes criticism of judges’ events to ‘lavajatistas’ – 06/27/2023 – Frederico Vasconcelos

The director of Consultor Jurídico magazine, Márcio Chaer, published, on May 30, an article under the title “Lava Jato orphans recompose clandestine task force“.

“The current motto of the clandestine task force is to criminalize the approach of Brazilian judges with colleagues and international authorities in meetings promoted in Europe”, he says.

Days before, I revealed on the blog that Chaer had organized a private event in a luxurious hotel on the shores of Lake Maggiore, in Milan, in which “a group of ministers from the STJ gave lectures and tourism”.

Chaer stated:

“Expert in the art of accusing without accusing, journalist Frederico Vasconcelos wrote a text this week that tries to impute promiscuity to these events. “without charging fees”, which is not true, in at least one case. Invited by this site, Frederico spoke to an audience of lawyers interested in knowing how to appear well in the press.”

I asked, days later, if Chaer could send proof of the fees I would have received. He didn’t send. There was no payment. “You will remember that other speakers were paid because registration was paid,” she insisted.

I told Chaer that I must have given more than one hundred lectures and participated in debates and classes for young journalists, lawyers, new members of the judiciary and the Public Ministry without charging fees. Personal option, as I see no irregularity in the receipt of fees by professionals.

Chaer says that “journalists engaged in the resurrection of the corrupt judicial practices of the ‘lava jet’ saw in congresses and forums a space of retaliation against judges who hindered their business”.

On July 21, 2019, journalist Janio de Freitas wrote in the Sheet:

“Violations of the norms by Moro and Deltan Dallagnol were taken by the dozens to the courts that guard the legislation. The always admirable reporter Frederico Vasconcelos showed now, in the Sheet, which representations against Moro’s transgressive attitudes have been in the National Council of Justice for two years and more. They sleep the sleep of homeless people”.

The debate cited by Chaer was not intended to guide lawyers interested in knowing how to “appear well in the press”.

By the way, in 2007 I refuted, in an article in Sheetthe attempt by lawyers to disqualify the report I made on criticism by Federal prosecutors of Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the STF, and how Chaer acted in this episode.

I wrote: “The report did not discuss the merits of the accusation or the profile of the prosecutor who questioned 451 contracts signed, without bidding, between the Advocacia Geral da União, when Gilmar was the head of the body, and the Instituto Brasiliense de Direito Público, of which is quoted as a shareholder, allowing subordinates of AGU to attend courses in that private company at the expense of the treasury”.

I also wrote: “This reporter spoke at length over the phone with Gilmar Mendes. He listened to the magistrate with respect and was treated with courtesy. He respected the requested silence, did not publish the comments or accusations he heard, some offensive to the honor of prosecutors. The next day, journalist Márcio Chaer, a mixture of “ghost-writer” and assistant to judges, as well as editor of a legal website, sought out this reporter and tried to obtain a report on the conversation.

The minister and the advisor did not contest.

Two years earlier, Chaer wrote a review of my book in his magazine. I reproduce some excerpts:

“In 2005, it is estimated that the so-called ‘legal community’ will be the recipient of two thousand new titles, whose combined print runs should reach 9 million books. There will be hardly any work as important as “Judges at the Dock“, by journalist Frederico Vasconcelos.

(…)

“The author displays a modesty, discretion and caution rare in journalism. You can see that he had much more information than he used. He could have gone further than he did”.
