Shareholders of Americanas must testify at CPI on fraud – 07/08/2023 – Elio Gaspari

The three major shareholders of the Americanas retail chain hardly escape testimonies in the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry that deals with the bankruptcy of the chain and the fraud that existed in its management.

It is likely that they will be treated with courtesy, but they should be prepared to answer the following question from a congressman: You were not in charge of Americanas and I believe that. Being a successful businessman, you did not see the fraud of tens of billions of reais. If you tell me that you didn’t know about the misdeeds of the manager of the store in Praça Marechal Deodoro, in my city, I would understand. What do you want me to understand?

Reporter Lauro Jardim revealed that the chain’s directors (nothing to do with the big shareholders) sold BRL 244 million of company shares in the second half of 2022, when it capsized. A year earlier, one of them (Márcio Cruz) bought a house in Jardim Pernambuco, in Leblon, for R$ 32.6 million, paid in cash.

The dean’s bad luck

Messing with students is unlucky. In 2007, the director of the Faculty of Law at USP, João Grandino Rodas, called the PM’s shock troops to evict students who occupied part of the building. He confronted the lesson of Dean Pedro Calmon, who told the commander of the Military Police troop in Rio that he intended to vacate the Faculty of Law: “You can only enter here with the entrance exam”.

Last week, Grandino Rodas was sentenced to pay compensation for having entered into an agreement with a banker and a lawyer. The two would pay for the renovation of an auditorium, restrooms and a classroom. In return, they would receive plaques honoring them.

Grandino was convicted of failing to comply with college procedures. That’s fine, but penalizing principals who accept donations and render proper accounts is a disincentive for anyone thinking of donating money to struggling public universities.

Zanin at the Supreme Court

Cristiano Zanin is a man of few words, but at the Federal Supreme Court he will continue to follow the habits of his life as a lawyer.

There is no record that he gave paid speeches.
