Senate Secom prohibits calling vandals ‘protesters’ – 09/02/2023 – Panel

The Senate banned the use of the term “demonstrators” to refer to those involved in the January 8 vandalism in official publications.
The rule appears in the Communication Manual used by Secom (Secretary of Communication) of the House, which underwent updating and included an entry about the episode.
According to the manual, “what happened was not a demonstration”. It is also prohibited to use the word “terrorist”, “a designation given only to those already convicted by the Justice for the crime of terrorism”.
The recommendation is to refer to the people who participated in the acts as “invaders” or “vandals”. For the event, the suggestion is to use “the 8th of January”, “the invasions of the 8th of January”, “acts of vandalism” or “anti-democratic acts”.
The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) has been tough in his manifestations regarding what happened. Days after the acts of vandalism, the parliamentarian stated that the “coup-mongering minority” that invaded the headquarters of the Three Powers managed to unite the institutions even more. The senator said there was a crime and asked for individual punishment for those involved.
“Before anyone says that these events constituted excesses of democratic manifestations of popular will, I say: these events are crimes. And, as crimes, they must be treated as such. They are not excesses of democratic manifestation.”
