Score a thousand in the Enem, student from Itapiranga may lose a spot due to lack of money

Itapiranga (AM) — The 18-year-old Amazonian student Rilary Castro, from the Tereza da Silva Leal State School, in the municipality of Itapiranga (227 kilometers from Manaus), achieved the maximum score in the essay of the National High School Exam 2022 (Enem). She dreams of studying civil engineering, but the financial situation does not allow her to live far from home and dedicate herself to her studies.

Rilary got a good grade on the Enem and expects to get a place on the dreamed course, through the Unified Selection System (Sisu), at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), in Manaus, but the distance between Manaus and Itapiranga, ticket price, school materials and food must prevent her from fulfilling her dream of starting a degree.

“Before even knowing the Enem scores, I had already talked to my family and said that I would continue studying to take the entrance exams that are given by the universities themselves and try to enter only in July. I can’t now, at the beginning of the year, for logistical reasons, such as housing and means of transport, start a college in Manaus”, says Rilary.

The student lives with her older brother and retired grandmother. The family drama to follow the studies has also been experienced by his brother. He was the first in his family to enter a public university. But he had to suspend the software engineering course because he was no longer financially able to continue during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rilary had already passed the entrance exam at the University of the State of Amazonas (UEA) in 2022, for the materials engineering course. But she was unable to travel from her municipality to the campus and enroll. The price of R$78 for the trip would compromise the family budget.

“I have a lot of determination and I see that many people from the countryside also have it. Sometimes, they want to attend even less competitive courses, but they need to travel to Itacoatiara and Manaus. Many things prevent us from going to college. Including financial matters. What’s the use of getting high grades? Seeing this whole situation, of making an effort and still not being able to fulfill the dream of studying, our expectations are greatly diminished. I feel wronged.”
