School of Parintins wins medal at the 15th National Olympiad in History of Brazil

A total of four teams from the state education network won the crystal medal in the competition

The Brandão de Amorim Full-Time State School, in the municipality of Parintins, won the “Crystal Medal” in the 15th edition of the National Olympics in History of Brazil (ONHB), held at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp).

The Olympics had 1,100 elementary school, 8th and 9th grade students, and high school students from all over Brazil. The medalists were announced at an award ceremony that was attended by authorities, family members, historians of national relevance, in addition to a show.

The team called “Barreirinhas da Amazônia”, from Parintins, formed by students Keice Teixeira, Sheila Maria Viana and Malcon Valente, guided by professor Janderson Brito, was one of the 340 finalist teams of the more than 30 thousand entered in the competition. This was the first time the school participated in the competition.

Student Keice Teixeira was thrilled to reach the end of the competition, representing her municipality.

“The experience of reaching the final of this Olympics is one of the best and I will take it with me for the rest of my life. Being able to represent my state, my city and my school is incredible. I hope that the Parintins teams that come after ours can feel the same emotion that I am experiencing right now”,

said.

Scientific Olympiad
Unlike other competitions, ONHB has a different format, where teams formed by a history teacher and three students do not need to learn the content of the test before participating in the Olympics, but while participating in it.

With six one-week online stages, carried out during the months of May and June, textbooks were provided, so that students could discuss topics that are not always addressed in the classroom, in addition to interdisciplinary content such as archeology, cultural heritage, urbanism, current events, among others.

The ONHB coordinator and professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp, Cristina Meneguello, explained that the Olympics sought to stimulate students’ interest in the history of the country, in addition to encouraging teamwork.

“Participants do not need to have previously studied the content to participate in the Olympics, as ample support material is offered, such as texts, images and maps, which support the teams’ decision when sending answers. This model resembles the work done by historians”,

explained.
