Smartphone manufacturer Samsung announced that it will bet on artificial intelligence to boost its sales this year.

The South Korean company announced that it plans to launch a new device on January 17 in San Jose, in the United States. The event, which will be broadcast live, should showcase the Galaxy S24.

The launch teaser only promises that “Galaxy AI is coming.” In November, a company spokesperson told the AFP news agency that the new cell phone would have a real-time translation service during calls, based on artificial intelligence technology. The company did not say whether Portuguese will be among the languages ​​covered.

In recent years, Samsung and other phone makers have relied on improvements in camera technology and flexible displays to stand out, but 2024 promises to be a year where additional AI capabilities are expected to come to the fore.

More than a billion smartphones with built-in generative AI are expected to be manufactured by the end of 2027, according to estimates from Counterpoint Research.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Dall-E tools, which generate textual or visual responses to user queries, are at the forefront of a wave of generative AI that has swept the tech industry — and helped make Nvidia a trillion-dollar company , providing leading AI training accelerators.

The next step to advance the technology is to integrate it into devices such as cell phones, according to predictions made by chipmaker Qualcomm that have been announced since last year.

“Samsung and Qualcomm are immediate leaders as their current product offerings and capabilities position them as trailblazers,” Counterpoint researchers wrote in December. “Just like it did with foldables, Samsung will likely capture almost 50% of the market in the next two years, followed by competitors Xiaomi, Vivo, Honor and Oppo.”
