Salles says Bolsonaro will help him with his candidacy – 04/18/2023 – Panel

Seeking to make his candidacy for São Paulo City Hall viable in 2024, federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL) met with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL-SP) this Tuesday (18), in Brasília.
According to the former Minister of the Environment, Bolsonaro undertook to try to convince the party leadership to launch his name and not support the current mayor, Ricardo Nunes (MDB). The PL has positions in municipal management and its leaders have indicated a preference to support the emedebista.
“He said I’m his name and he’s going to talk to Valdemar [Costa Neto, presidente do PL] for us to walk. What he commented today is that there is already much more support for me than just the state and federal Bolsonarist benches. There are already others who are not even in this group”, says Salles to the Panel.
“That is, it is going well and he will talk to Tarcísio [de Freitas, governador de SP] and Valdemar. We are 100% together, he didn’t even hesitate,” he adds.
At the end of March, Bolsonaro said that he preferred Salles to Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) in the dispute, because, according to him, the former minister is more experienced and knows much more than his son.
When asked specifically about Nunes, however, he stated that he was not speaking for the PL, that he will not issue an order and that the decision will be made by the party’s São Paulo bench.
On Saturday (16), Salles referred to the mayor as an “icon of the center”, a block that he said was a cancer in politics. He said that one of the goals of his project to run for mayor in 2024 is to get “the thieves” out of mayoralty.
Nunes called the Comptroller General of São Paulo and the Attorney General of the Municipality, bodies of the municipal government, who requested that Salles then forward to the city administration the information he claims to have regarding possible corruption schemes.
