Journalist Sabine Righetti, researcher and professor at Labjor-Unicamp (Journalism Laboratory at the State University of Campinas) and co-founder of Agência Bori, won the José Reis Prize for Scientific and Technological Dissemination, the country’s main recognition for the area of scientific journalism .
The award is granted by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) with the aim of encouraging professionals and institutions that seek to disseminate and popularize science. For this, three categories are alternated at each edition: researcher and writer, institution or communication vehicle and, this year, journalist in science and technology.
Doctor in science policy, Righetti worked at Folha until 2015 and still collaborates with analyzes on health, science and education in the newspaper. In 2020, she founded Agência Bori, which supports reporters in science coverage. Bori launched the Infovacina Trainee program in 2022, and the initiative was recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization) as an example of innovation in communication.
The award honors José Reis (1907-2002), a physician and journalist who participated in the creation of FAPESP (São Paulo State Research Support Foundation). Reis collaborated with Folha from 1947 to 2002, including as editor-in-chief between 1962 and 1967.
In 1978, he wrote about research published in the United States with an alert to climate changes caused by carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere — this was the first time that Folha spoke about global warming.
The award ceremony will take place on July 23, at UFPR (Federal University of Paraná), during the 75th Annual Meeting of the SBPC (Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science). Journalist Sabine Righetti will also participate in the event with a lecture on her work on the 25th, at 9:30 am.
