Ibama fined the railroad concessionaire Rumo Malha Oeste in R$ 15.5 million for irregularities in the disposal of wooden sleepers and iron rails in the Piraputanga stream, in Corumbá (MS).

The case took place at the end of March. This was the biggest fine imposed by the agency this year and one of the biggest that Rumo has received since 2014, when it took over ALL, responsible for the railway concessions now operated by the Cosan group, owned by businessman Rubens Ometto.

In a note, Rumo denies having committed the infractions. She reported having been notified by Ibama and said that her legal team presented the defense to Ibama.

“The company clarifies that it did not carry out any intervention in the region of the Piraputanga stream, in Corumbá (MS), and does not recognize any damage alleged in the assessment”, it said in a note.

“It also highlights that in the copies of the administrative procedure it is verified that those responsible for the alleged environmental damage are other companies that have no relation with the railroad’s activities.”

The Malha Oeste concession was acquired by Novoeste (later to become ALL) in 1996 and the concession is in the process of being renewed by ANTT (Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres).

According to the agency, there are more than 1,973km of line that “is depreciated”.

ANTT claims that Rumo “invested at insufficient levels for its maintenance”, generating loss of transport capacity, with trains traveling at speeds below potential. The process for a new tender should be finalized next year.
