The female duo formed by Japanese Miyu Kato and Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified this Sunday (4) from the Roland Garros tournament after Kato accidentally hit a ball on a ball.
The incident occurred when the pair Kato-Sutjiadi won the second set, by 3 to 1, against the pair Marie Bouzkova (Czech Republic) and Sara Sorribes (Spain), who had won the first set
At the end of a game, Kato, close to the net, sent a ball to the ball with a racket, which was on the opposite side of the court. The ball was sent directly to the ball, without touching the ground, and ended up hitting her in the back of the head.
The 28-year-old Japanese tennis player immediately apologized to the girl, who was crying and shaking.
Initially, Kato received a warning, but a marshal eventually disqualified the pair shortly after the Bouzkova-Sorribes duo protested to the chair umpire.
“Our warning was because the chair umpire didn’t see that she was crying and in pain,” Bouzkova said.
“We told the supervisor he should take a closer look because we saw the young lady was crying and the ball went straight for her. It’s not like it bounced or was a slow ball,” he added.
On Saturday, Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva was lucky enough not to be disqualified after kicking a ball into the crowd in her match against American Coco Gauff.
“Soon afterwards I thought it was very stupid of me, because it was not necessary to do that”, admitted Andreeva, who ended up losing the duel.
