Rita Lee: Tarcísio does not declare official mourning in SP – 05/10/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), did not declare official mourning in the state for the death of singer Rita Lee, on Monday (8). The stance is similar to that adopted by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), his political godfather, who ignored episodes of national commotion during his term.

According to the press office of the Tarcísio administration, as the federal government edited a decree of regret across the country for the death of the singer, the state is already included in the gesture.

The government of São Paulo, however, has already declared official mourning for the death of people who were born or lived in the state even when the federal government had also paid homage.

In December 2016, for example, then-Governor Geraldo Alckmin declared three days of official mourning for the death of Cardinal Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns, Archbishop Emeritus of São Paulo. The president at the time, Michel Temer, had also expressed regret across the country. A similar situation happened after the death of doctor Zilda Arns, in January 2010. At the time, then-president Lula declared official mourning in the country, as did José Serra in the state of São Paulo.

Tarcísio was Bolsonaro’s minister and supported him in last year’s presidential elections. Rita Lee criticized the former president and even nicknamed the tumor in her left lung “Jair” in a reference to the politician.

In 2021, in an interview with the newspaper O Globo, she showed disapproval of the then Bolsonaro government. “It’s scary to see people in charge with such outdated minds. We were supposed to be in the Jetsons and we’re going back to the Flintstones. Brazil seems to have a strange karma… I think it started with the indigenous genocide”, said Rita at the time .

The declaration of official mourning is a symbolic act that works as a tribute. The City of São Paulo, for example, made a point of also publishing its official mourning for the death of Rita Lee, who was born in the capital of São Paulo and had great identification with the city and the state.

The artist, who is considered the biggest Brazilian rock star, was remembered by the current state management of São Paulo in a note of regret published on the government’s official website and Instagram. Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, on the other hand, did not comment on the subject on his social networks. Two days earlier, he lamented the death of cook Palmirinha Onofre in a post on Instagram and on Twitter.

During his term as president, Bolsonaro drew attention for not declaring mourning on the occasion of the death of influential Brazilian personalities in different branches, such as Elza Soares, Marília Mendonça and João Gilberto.
