The headquarters of the municipality of Oiapoque became, on the night of this Friday, 19, the center of debates in the country on research for oil exploration in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, in the Atlantic Ocean, territorial sea of Amapá, distant 540 kilometers from the mouth of the river Amazonas, two days after Ibama officially denied the activities.
The debates took place at the “Joaquim Nabuco School” during a Public Hearing held by the Legislative Assembly of Amapá (Alap), bringing together representatives of the organized society of Oiapoque; mayor and councilors of the municipality; Governor Clécio Luís; state and federal deputies from Pará and Maranhão; senators Randolfe Rodrigues, Lucas Barreto and Davi Alcolumbre, the latter represented by the alternate Josiel Alcolumbre; and representatives of state agencies and Petrobras, among others.
Initiated at 7 pm under the direction of state deputy Alliny Serrão, president of Alap, the Public Hearing consisted of speeches by authorities and opinion by the geologist from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), João Carlos Corrêa, who presented geophysical and environmental data from the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, and the president of the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum and Natural Gas (IBP), Roberto Furian Ardenghy, who spoke about the prospects for oil and natural gas exploration in the country.
Otávio Borges Gomes, secretary of mining for the government of Amapá, at the Public Hearing presented data on oil and gas off the coast of the state and the possibilities for sustainable development based on economic activity. The holder of the Amapá mining portfolio is a geologist and geophysicist with specialization in petroleum and public sector regulation and mining law.
Senator Lucas Barreto, in an interview before the event, revealed that he had just received information from the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stating that Ibama will reformulate the decision to reject research for oil exploration on the Equatorial Margin.
Lucas asserted that Petrobras, in fact, will only prospect for oil on the coast of Amapá, since the existence of gas in the amount of 16 billion m³ is already guaranteed. “It will be the salvation of Petrobras, which so badly needs a source of clean energy”, thrilled the senator.
The Karipuna leader in Aldeia do Manga, municipality of Oiapoque, José Elito, said “let development come, not only for Oiapoque, but for all of Amapá. He added: “The expectation is that it will happen. We are supporting this great undertaking. We are not against it, we are always in favor of it, as it will bring benefits to indigenous peoples”.
The councilor of Oiapoque, Fernando Anká, an indigenous person, said that he sees in research for oil and subsequent exploration a unique opportunity that the Brazilian authorities and people must seize tooth and nail, as it will benefit not only Amapá, but all of Brazil. “I think about my children and my grandchildren. We are here to hear what the benefits and counterparts will be for the municipality and indigenous communities”, concluded Anká.
