Renan refuses to report on the money in his underwear case – 06/20/2023 – Panel

Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) declined to report the case against his colleague Chico Rodrigues (PSB-RR), caught with money in his underwear, at the Senate Ethics Council.
The parliamentarian had been drawn at the last Council meeting, last Wednesday (14). With the refusal, the process now awaits a new draw to designate another rapporteur.
Asked about the reason for the refusal, Renan limited himself to answering: “Because I don’t want to”.
The parties Rede Sustentabilidade and Cidadania filed a representation against Rodrigues in 2020, after the senator was the target of an operation by the PF (Federal Police) for alleged embezzlement in resources intended to combat the coronavirus.
At the time, he tried to hide wads of cash in his underwear. About R$ 30 thousand were found in the senator’s residence.
The parliamentarian was removed from office by decision of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) and only returned to the mandate in February 2021.
Last week’s meeting was the second after a period of three and a half years without activity by the Ethics Council.
In this session, openings of disciplinary proceedings were also admitted against senators Cid Gomes (PDT-CE), Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), Styvenson Valentim (Pode-RN) and Randolfe Rodrigues (without party-AP).
