AFS organization program offers opportunities for students aged 15 to 17

Have you ever imagined doing an exchange with everything paid for? Students aged 15 to 17 have this opportunity with the 5th edition of “AFS Global Stem Academies”. Funded by the global energy company British Petroleum (BP), the AFS program – the oldest international exchange organization – offers full scholarships with a view to going abroad in 2024.

Combining digital learning for three months and in-person learning for four weeks, the initiative has ten specific vacancies for Brazilian candidates. The United States, Egypt, China, India and also Brazil, for young people from other countries, will host the face-to-face part of the program, welcoming students from 18 nationalities between June and August next year. Registration is open until January 15, 2024 on the AFS website (

The program’s proposal is for students to enrich their knowledge about sustainability and STEM skills (acronym in English for Science, Technology, Engieering and Mathematics, respectively, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through an interactive and practical curriculum, while developing critical global competencies.

Volunteer and President of the AFS Manaus Committee, Amazonian entrepreneur and pedagogue Jhony Abreu, creator of the startup EduMaker Brasil, focused on educational robotics, details the requirements for registration: being born between September 1, 2006 and April 1, 2009 ; being Brazilian; be attending high school in a public or private school in 2024; never having had a failure; intermediate level of English; demonstrate good performance in STEM (average 7 or above); have the correct motivation for what the program offers (group experience, intercultural learning workshops and activities in STEM areas); have family authorization and support; have access to a computer, smartphone or other digital device, with an integrated webcam and microphone, to access the content of the virtual program and participate in the dialogue sessions.

Even more so because, upon completion, they will be supported through ongoing mentoring and will have the chance to obtain financing for their social impact projects”,

The list of ten selected Brazilian scholarship holders will be published on February 16, 2024 on the AFS organization website.

Cultural Day

The “AFS Global Stem Academies” agenda is divided into two parts, the first being virtual, which culminates in student-led social impact projects and presentations that offer potential solutions to real-world challenges, covering the topics of climate change and transition. energy. “For 12 weeks, students will participate in live meetings, when they will have the opportunity to meet all the exchange students,” says Luana Rebouças, AFS Alliances consultant.

In the second part, fellows travel to one of their chosen destinations, where they will perform community service and visit innovative, sustainability-focused local operations to learn firsthand how companies and organizations are using STEM skills in practice.

At the end of this entire process, they receive the Advanced Certificate in Global Competence for Social Impact, granted by the AFS organization and the Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania (USA), responsible for all the content of the initiative.
