The FIFA Club World Cup kicked off this Wednesday, with a 3-0 victory for Egypt’s Al-Ahly over New Zealand’s Auckland City. The triumph in Tangier, Morocco, took the Egyptian team to the quarterfinals, stage in which they will face the Seattle Sounders, in a duel that will define the opponent of Real Madrid, classified straight to the semifinals.
Al-Ahly and Seattle Sounders face off on Saturday at 2:30 pm, Brasília time. Earlier, on the same day, the host Wydad Casablanca faces Al-Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, in the match that will define Flamengo’s opponent, also already guaranteed in the semi.
Before the ball rolled, there was a lively opening ceremony for the Club World Cup, full of elements of Moroccan culture. In addition, a tribute was paid to Pelé, who died in December last year. Walid Regragui, coach of the Morocco national team, the great surprise of the World Cup in Qatar, entered the field to say a few words before the image of the King of Football was displayed on the screen, amidst a light show.
Once the ball was rolling, Auckland tried to show some competitiveness, but were soon pushed back by Al-Ahly, who maintained possession and patiently exchanged passes in search of space. After many attempts, the Egyptian team opened the scoring only in the 46th minute of the second half, after a finish from outside the area by El Shahat.
Al-Ahly doubled the score ten minutes into the second half, after a quick combination that resulted in a shot by Sherif, face to face with goalkeeper Tracey, into the New Zealand net. Auckland went up in search of a reaction, but did not show the resources to achieve it and even saw the opponent score the third, with a dunk by Tau after a back-heel pass by Kahraba.
The end of the game was marked by a lengthy VAR review, triggered to determine whether a foul in favor of Al-Ahly would have been inside or outside the area. After the referee analyzed the move on the edge of the field, he called a foul outside the area and expelled Mitchell, author of the foul, a few minutes before ending the match.
