Announcement will be made by Lula and will be valid immediately, says Minister of Education. New values were not indicated; last readjustment was in 2013, says association of researchers. The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, said this Thursday (19) that the government should announce, later this month, a readjustment in the values of Capes and CNPq scholarships. “The idea is that, by the end of this month, the president can announce the readjustment of grants from both Capes and CNPQ”, he declared. Still according to Camilo, the new values must be valid immediately from the announcement. The readjustment index, however, was not disclosed. A decade without readjustment Research scholarships have not been readjusted since 2013 and have already lost nearly two-thirds of their purchasing power, according to the National Association of Graduate Students (ANPG). During Lula’s first two terms, research scholarships were readjusted three times. In 2003, when the PT candidate entered the Presidency, the scholarship for a master’s degree was R$724 and for a doctorate, R$1,073. In 2010, in the last year of the government, the values jumped to R$ 1.2 thousand and R$ 1.8 thousand, respectively. The last readjustment took place during Dilma Rousseff’s government, when master’s scholarships increased to R$1,500 and doctoral scholarships, to R$2,200, values that remain until today.
