Rapporteur: short Zanin sabbath with questions in block – 06/20/2023 – Panel

In the accounts of Senator Veneziano Vital (MDB-PB), the sabbath this Wednesday (21) of lawyer Cristiano Zanin, appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the STF (Federal Supreme Court), should not exceed 5 hours long.
The first to question Zanin is Vital himself, the rapporteur for the nomination. He intends to ask a maximum of five questions, so as not to lengthen the scrutiny and give other colleagues the opportunity to express themselves.
Afterwards, the president of the CCJ (Commission of Constitution and Justice), Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), must open the space for the other senators in block, of three in three.
This thwarts the opposition’s strategy of asking individual questions and at least managing to put pressure on the lawyer. By answering one by one “knock it out”, the parliamentarian with the floor can demand the answers and not leave the gap so that something is purposely not answered.
The base of the Lula government hopes that the opposition’s questions will revolve around the same theme, the relationship with the president, a topic for which they will arrive prepared. These parliamentarians are not betting on greater constraints for Zanin, who in recent weeks has managed to win the support even of allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The shortest interview to date was that of Minister Cármen Lúcia, in May 2006, and lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes, followed by Ricardo Lewandowski, who is now retiring, who lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes. The longest was by Edson Fachin, with 12 hours and 25 minutes.
