Most Brazilians defend that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) should focus on the country’s own problems instead of trying to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, according to Genial/Quaest survey carried out between the 13th and 16th of this month.
Of the respondents, 59% say that the PT should focus on national issues, against 35% who say that he should try to resolve the conflict, because world peace is important. Another 6% did not answer or said they did not know.
Among those who approve of the Lula government, opinion appears to be divided: 47% say that the president’s focus should be on Brazil, while 48% emphasize the importance of the search for peace. Among those who disapprove, 76% defend the first option, against 19% who choose the second.
The president has made wide-ranging speeches regarding the war in Ukraine recently. At the end of his trip to China, the PT accused the US of encouraging the continuation of the conflict, in a veiled reference to sending weapons to Kiev, and demanded that Washington “start talking about peace”.
Afterwards, on a stopover in the United Arab Emirates on his return to Brazil, he again said that Kiev has as much responsibility as Moscow for the clashes.
The White House classified Lula’s position as “automatic repetition of Russian and Chinese propaganda” and “deeply problematic”.
The margin of error of the survey, made up of 2,015 Brazilians aged over 16, is 2.2 percentage points.
