Pumas terminates Daniel Alves’ contract for just cause after arrest

THE cougars announced this Friday (20) that the employment contract of Daniel Alves with the club will be terminated for just cause. The player is preventively arrested in Spain and is accused of sexual assault.

“With the information received today about the legal process facing the player Daniel Alves and for which he is being held in Spain, we decided to communicate the following: Club Universidad Nacional (Pumas) has taken the decision to terminate the employment contract for just cause player Daniel Alves starting today”, said the club’s president, Leopoldo Silva, in a press release.

The Pumas director reinforced that the decision is based on the institution’s respect for people and that the club cannot have its image and philosophy harmed by the conduct of a player.

“With this decision, the club reiterates its commitment not to tolerate any act by members of our institution, whoever it may be, that threatens the spirit of the club and its values. Daniel Alves was signed by Pumas in July 2022. His goal was to be playing to continue on the list of selectables by coach Tite for the Qatar World Cup. The 39-year-old right-back appeared in just a few games as the club were soon eliminated from the Mexican tournament.

Soon after, the player returned to Spain and started using the facilities of Barcelona, ​​a club with which he has a long professional relationship, to maintain his physical conditioning. The player was summoned to compete in the World Cup with the Brazilian national team.

The athlete was detained in the morning and then had his preventive arrest ordered in the early afternoon by Judge Maria Concepción Canton Martín, of the Investigative Court 15 of Barcelona.

According to the Spanish press, the contradiction in the right-back’s testimony was decisive for the country’s Public Ministry to ask for arrest and the judge to accept. In early January, the player gave an interview to the program “Y Ahora Sonsoles”, from Antena 3, in which he confirmed that he was in the same nightclub as the woman who accuses him, but denied having touched the complainant without her consent and said that he did not even know her.

In the statement, however, according to the media in Spain, the athlete claimed to have had consensual relations with the woman, whose name was not revealed. The alleged sexual crime allegedly took place in a unisex bathroom in the VIP area of ​​the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Periódico, the Brazilian locked, assaulted and raped the woman in the bathroom in the VIP area of ​​the nightclub. He denies the accusations.

The judge argued in the decision to arrest the player that there was a risk of flight, since the athlete no longer lives in Spain and has the financial resources to leave the country at any time.
